Bir-Billing is a paragliding destination in the heart of the Himalayas near the famous tourist destination of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. It was “India’s first World Paragliding Championship”. This event happened in the month of October 2015.”

The World Cup was attended by 150 top-rated paragliding pilots from around the world and 500 free-flying pilots. It was a great opportunity for many local paragliding pilots to show their skills to the world. 

Bir Billing offers paragliding, trekking to Himachal tribal villages, mountain biking, fishing and camping.

Mcleodganj and Dharamshala is 70 km from Bir. Billing is located north of Bir at a distance of 14 km and is the gateway to the Thamsar Pass trek. The trek leads to the most tribal region ‘Bada Bhangal’ of Himachal Pradesh. Bir is a predominantly Buddhist town and is home to a monastery and a center for Tibetan handicrafts.

Camp Oak View offers camping in hard tents, Machaan tents and luxury Machaan tents in Bir and Billing valley of Himachal. Specially designed for a royal feel in the tent, Machaan tents provided a balcony to enjoy the nature around the campsite. One can drive all the way to the camp. The camp offers excellent food and an evening bonfire will make you feel like you’re in paradise.

OnMap Adventure offers you paragliding and camping in Bir Billing. The Bir-Billing area is known as a popular spot for paraglider pilots, Indians and visitors from all over the world. The flight season is from December to June and from September to November. The village continues to organize regular international competitions and events. The paragliding launch site is located 14 km north in a meadow in Billing, at an altitude of 8,020 ft, while the landing site and most accommodation for tourists is in the village of Chowgan, on the southern edge. from Bir.

Marked by the beauty of lush green hills and valleys, Bir Billing is a paradise on earth. The city attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world to take several treks, taste the local cuisine and enjoy some peace and quiet. Bir Billing is famous worldwide for paragliding due to its perfect hill position and wind direction.

The weight limit for paragliding is 20-95 kg, for weight between 95-115 kg the paragliding team charges an extra fee of INR 500 and also decides this at the time of paragliding depending on the fitness level of the person.

Itinerary:

  • Starting point or meeting point :- Paragliding Landing area is the meeting point. Guests can park their car in the parking lot. The airstrip is known as chougan, which is located 3.5 km from the national highway.
  • Complete the registration form and procedure.
  • Meet the paragliding team and learn about pilot flying with guests.
  • Leave your bags, luggage and unnecessary items at our office / hotel reception.
  • Guests are allowed to carry a mobile phone, wallet – it is recommended to keep them in zipped pockets or hand them to the pilots to keep in their bag for safekeeping.
  • Clothing tips – full trousers, jacket, gloves and hat for winter, sun scream, lace up shoes.
  • It takes 45 minutes to reach the Paragliding Point (Billing), which is 16 km to the top of the mountain.
  • The Billing paragliding launch site is located at an altitude of 8020 feet above sea level.
  • In the months of January and February, there is a possibility of snowfall at Billing (paragliding take-off), due to which the roads are closed for several kilometers (depending on the snowfall – 2 to 3 days after the snowfall). During this time, the pilots were unable to reach the paragliding take-off points by car. So you need to trek for several kilometers (10 to 30 minutes trek). This is the situation just after the snowfall in Bir Billing. Trekking to the starting point is also worth doing through the snow.
  • There, the pilots check the wind direction and decide on the take-off point – sometimes the wind is east and sometimes west, so take off from any point according to the wind direction.
  • Paragliding equipment – Harness, helmet and connecting glider with carabiner.
  • Pilot briefing before take off. Ask pilots if GOPRO Video is required.
  • Wait for the right wind to take off. Fly in the air. Guests have their hands free during the flight and the harness has become a chair to sit on.
  • Prepare from landing, listen to the pilots instructions for a safe landing.
  • Landing in Bir. Paragliding landing field is Chougan open land. The airstrip is at an altitude of 4,650 feet above sea level.
  • Open gears and collect video if selected.
  • The airstrip is Chougan and also the beginning of Tibetan Market or Tibetan Colony. Tibetan colony area and has many cafes, restaurants, bakeries, handlooms, Dhabas and monasteries.
  • Later departure.
  • The paragliding activity takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Price exclusion:
  • Minimum age required for paragliding is 12 years, age lower then 12 years not allowed to do paragliding in Bir Billing.
  • Paragliding weight limit is 25 to 90 kg in October to February and 30 kg to 90 kg in April to 15 July, but if weight is between 90 kg to 115 kg the paragliding team charge INR 500/- extra and also decide it at the time of paragliding, depending upon fitness of the person.
  • Travel insurance covering medical evacuation, hospitalization, baggage insurance and trip cancellation.
  • Any additional expenses for Photography of paragliding flight, so supplement charges of INR 200/- for Photos by freelancers clicking pictures at Landing site.
  • expenses caused by a disturbance in trip program due to circumstances like weather conditions, sickness, natural disasters, riots, etc.
  • Liability for or insurance against injury, loss of life, accidents or loss of goods.
| Things to know about Paragliding activity before doing it in Bir Billing
  • The minimum age for paragliding is 12 years and Paragliding is not recommended for pregnant women.
  • The weight limit is a major concern with paragliding – the weight limit varies at different times of the year in Bir Billing. October to December and February to April – weight limit is 25kg to 90kg and weight limit for January, May and June is 30kg to 90kg. If the person’s weight exceeds 90 kg, the pilot must carry a larger glider, but depending on the person’s fitness and wind conditions.
  • The person has had major heart surgery or other surgery for which gliding is not recommended. If an elbow, knee, spine or back injury occurs – we recommend not paragliding and inform the pilot in advance.
  • A person suffering from anxiety, height phobia is not designed for paragliding.
  • Consumption of alcohol and restricted drugs is strictly prohibited before paragliding.
  • Avoid heavy food before paragliding. The journey to the paragliding launch site is 45 minutes, which is a hilly mountain road.
  • It is recommended not to ask pilots to perform stunts, as it is not safe for the gliders, creating high tension on the hangars of the gliders. The Paragliding Association banned it.
  • Paragliding must be pre-booked at Bir Billing. Good pilots are available according to the reservation made.
  • When paragliding, do not carry any objects with you, no place to hang them, because it causes inconvenience and is not safe. Keep your wallet and cell phone in a zipped pocket or hand them to the pilots as there is a chance they will slip out of your pocket in mid-air.
  • Follow government guidelines for Covid 19 – maintain social distance with other guests, disinfect your hands from time to time, wear a mask even during the flight.
  • Paragliding depends on the weather conditions, paragliding may stop due to bad wind, rain, snow, storm and continue after the weather is normal.
  • If the paragliding is canceled due to weather conditions, it can be postponed to the next day or canceled according to the needs of the guests.
  • Before paragliding, you must carry your Aadhar card and valid photo ID and you must fill a liability waiver form.
  • A jacket should be worn in all seasons, as the take-off location is cold throughout the year. Wear full pants, lace up shoes during flight.
  • The paragliding activity is open from mid-September to mid-July and closed during monsoon. and October, November, December, February, March and April are good for long paragliding sessions.
  • You need to ask if the pilot is licensed and experienced.
  • Check that the pilots have not consumed alcohol or taken drugs.

Safety Of Paragliding

  • Paragliding at Bir Billing managed by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department under the supervision of Paragliding Association. There are two paragliding associations named – “BPA” (Billing Paragliding Association) and “BAPA” (Billing Aero Paragliding Association). Billing Paragliding Association is the first association and organized paragliding world cup in 2015 – which was the rise of commercial paragliding in Bir Billing. Most pilots in Bir Billing are registered with the BPA. During the paragliding pilot license exams, the pilot must be affiliated with one of the associations. Association members also recommend pilots for a license.
  • Most of the pilots at Bir Billing are associated with the Billing Paragliding Association. BPA pilots have no major accidents and the pilots fly safely. Types of equipment such as gliders, reserve parachutes, lines, carabiners, harnesses, their buckles. “BPA” organized safety instructions for pilots from time to time. Pilots are registered with BPA.
  • Now BPA has decided to build a rescue team in Bir Billing for paragliding and compulsory accident insurance for every tourist flying here to ensure safe and secure paragliding. Each pilot is now limited to a limited number of paragliding lessons each day. In winter – 4 paragliding lessons and in summer 6 lessons, which enable smooth and controlled flights.
  • Every pilot must need a valid license registered with any association, a medical checkup every 6 months, an approved checked glider.
  • Now paragliding rates are also fixed at INR 3000/- as the minimum rate of flight price for tourists traveling to Bir Billing valley. Anyone charging less than this was fined and the agency flew for a week, All guidelines introduced from 1 March 2022.
  • Every pilot must need a valid license registered with any association, a medical checkup every 6 months, an approved checked glider.

Confirmation Policy
  • The customer receives a confirmation voucher via email within 24 hours of successful booking.
  • In case the preferred slots are unavailable, an alternate schedule of the customer’s preference will be arranged and a new confirmation voucher will be sent via email.
  • Alternatively, the customer may choose to cancel their booking before confirmation and a full refund will be processed.
Refund Policy
  • The applicable refund amount will be processed within 10 business days.
  • All applicable refunds will be credited to the client’s respective account.
Cancellation Policy
  • In case of cancellation 15 days before the travel date, 20% of the total cost of the tour will be charged as cancellation fees
  • In case of cancellation 7 days to 15 days before the travel date, 40% of the total cost of the tour will be charged as cancellation fees
  • If canceled between 0 days and 7 days before the travel date, you will be charged 100% of the total cost of the tour as cancellation fees

| Booking policy

In case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, some tours or activities may be cancelled. In such cases, the operator will try its best to provide an alternative. However, cashback is not applicable on the same.
Cancellations are strictly subject to the cancellation conditions stated on the website and are regardless of the booking date.
