| Overview

Best Winter Games Slope
Gulmarg is a city nestled in the Pir Panjal range of the Western Himalayas at an altitude of 8,690 feet above sea level. Literally translated as the ‘Bow of Flowers’, it is surrounded by the glittering snow-capped peaks of the Alps, green pastures, colourful meadows, deep valleys and pine-clad hillsides. The scenic beauty is famous for its ski resort established in 1927, Gulmarg Gondola – the second longest cable car in Asia and the highest golf course in the world at an altitude of 2,650 meters. Gulmarg is an absolute delight for adventure seekers. Called the ‘heart of winter sports, it offers a plethora of activities such as skiing, snowboarding, horse riding, heli-skiing, snowmobiling, sledging, etc. The best season to visit Gulmarg is from October to June as it is an ideal destination, especially during winter when the snowy landscape transforms into a premier winter sports destination in India. With OnMap you get an opportunity to learn skiing and snowboarding from the first private ski school in Gulmarg was recognized by J&K Tourism and affiliated with the Ski Association of Delhi(member of the Winter Games Federation of India). As we all are aware that adventure training plays a very important role in the development of personality in students. This aspect has been understood by many renowned schools and has been sending their students to such institutions for training in various adventure activities and skiing is one of them.  The school is promoted by a professional team compromising of Mir Mudassar Nazir (Member of winter Olympic squad, Vancouver 2010), Mr Ayaz Ashraf Zargar(Member of junior Asiad), Tariq Zargar and Shabir Dar (coaching degrees from HAPPO school japan Ski Asociation and Asst. coaches to Swiss coach during the camp organized by WGFI). The team also have coaching expertise of 12+ years in the Indian Institute of Skiing & Mountaineering, Gulmarg. The team will ensure a safe and up-to-date skiing experience with the utmost focus on the latest techniques. Furthermore, the team will have a daily review mechanism to update the students about their progress during the period of training. At the end of the course, the participants will receive a certificate recognized by the Ski Association of Delhi. As a part of the society, we at Gulmarg Snow School are going to conduct 9 nights and 8 days of skiing courses for the students from the 1st week of January onwards.

Best time to visit:-

Summer: Gulmarg is good during the summer season from April to mid-June. The calm and pleasant summer sun and evening make the trek more pleasant.

Monsoon: In monsoon, the trek route is muddy and slippery. It is better to avoid risky places trekking in this season.

Spring: The spring month from mid-September to early November is considered the best time to do some treks in Gulmarg. Trekking is fun with lush greenery all around and calm weather.

Winter: Gulmarg is best in winter because you get snow-covered meadows for Skiing or Snowboarding which is the main thing in Gulmarg winter.

| Itinerary:

Altitude: 8,500 ft

Highlight:

  • After reaching Gulmarg, your Instructors will allocate the rooms.
  • Allotments of Skiing equipment.
  • Introduction to Ski Equipment.
  • Enjoy your evening in Gulmarg snowfall and a cozy night after dinner.

Altitude: 8,500 ft

Highlight:

  • You will learn about controlled falls. Before you hit the slopes, you need to know how to control your fall when you lose your balance.
  • The goal is to practice control on a slope. We don’t exactly want speed – just enough to move slowly down the slope in a straight line. It’s okay to fall. You probably will… several times. If you feel like you’re losing control and unintentionally accelerating, try widening the snowplow and leaning your weight forward with your shins fully resting on your boots. The inside edge of each ski should be slightly bent into the snow for better control.
  • This will continue until 4 or 5 in the evening. You will probably feel drained at the end of the day. Relax once you return to your resort. You earned it. Freshen up and explore Gulmarg in the evening!

Altitude: 8,500 ft

Highlight:

  • It’s basically a controlled way to direct your body, avoid other beginners on the slope, and honestly just have fun. The primary concept is to keep your torso straight, the weight pushing on the inside edge of the ski against the direction you intend to turn.
  • For today, You will continue to practise snowplough and snowplough turns until you are comfortable with the new level of speed that comes with these turns.

Altitude: 8,500 ft

Highlight:

  • So today the modules are the same but the slope is new (Highland slope or Slope 85). Moving to a new slope has two goals: to avoid the crowds on the children’s slope and to start training on newer terrain.
  • First, you start by going straight down the slope in a snowplough position on skis. This will be done several times before you attempt the snowplough turn.
  • Today your instructor will focus on perfecting snowplough turns. The goal is to make smooth S-shaped curves in the snow as you go down the slope. The smoother and more symmetrical they are, the more control you have over the skis.
  • Make sure you wear plenty of sunscreens and are layered appropriately to protect yourself from the cold. Glasses are a must every day.

Altitude: 8,500 ft

Highlight:

  • Today you’ll learn how to take an uphill swing (Move upwards) on a slope.
  • Today your instructor will focus on perfecting uphill. The goal is to make your walk smooth upward on the snow slope. The more control you have over the skis with the force on your ankles.

Altitude: 8,500 ft

Highlight:

  • Today is the day when you will literally test your skills. It’s time to evaluate your skiing skills. Your instructor will test your knowledge of skiing (theory + practice) and notify you of your certification. Expect to be tested on the snowplough, snowplough turns, side step and stem turns.
  • You’ll use the morning to brush up on your skills. This will be followed by a competition – a mini slalom-style race – held on a slope chosen by your instructor. During the competition, you will be graded on three factors: speed, technique and control.
  • After the competition, there will be a final ceremony where diplomas and medals will be handed out (gold, silver and bronze for the first three places in the race).
  • After the ceremony, take your time on the slope and return to the hotel for a cosy evening with kahwa.

Altitude: 8,500 ft

Highlight:

  • On this day after breakfast you can say buy to Gulmarg and your instructor according to your time!
