| Overview
A stepping stone for hardcore rock climbing, Friendship Peak runs in some influential circles. Nestled comfortably between all the giants of the two main mountain ranges – Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar, Friendship Peak is the amphitheatre for the highest mountains in both these ranges. With a bird’s-eye view of Manali from the saddle to the Lahaul range from its summit; The pinnacle of friendship faces Hanuman Tibba on one side and finds as his neighbour giants like Indrasan, Deo Tibba, Priyadarshani, and Seven Sisters to name a few.
The Friendship Peak trek is more than just a nice view from the top. With a 5289 m, it falls into the largest range of the Lesser Himalayas – the Pir Panjal. Apart from humbly standing in the middle of 6000, we are especially in awe of the trek trail that takes us through the most amazing visuals. We encounter alpine meadows, dense forests and wide glades, crossing ice-cold mountain streams – and of course, a thick bed of glistening white snow – all crammed into 34 km. It has stunning campsites full of local wildlife and bursting with colour waiting to be wandered and explored. Even the landscape buried under a thick layer of snow is nothing tiring to look at.
Read: Highlights of Friendship Peak
Walking through glacial moraines, navigating around massive snow rocks, unpredictable weather and brutal slopes keep the journey exciting throughout. Friendship peak is no shortage of expedition for its difficult terrain, harsh temperature and constant steep climb from the moment you first step out of your Summit Camp tent. Each peak season will encounter different kinds of challenges and therefore different visuals and a completely different experience.
Although IMF is designated as a trekking peak, don’t let Friendship Peak’s elevation fool you. It is no less difficult to please than the 6,000 in its vicinity, so it should only be attempted by experienced trekkers with the know-how of basic mountain skills and previous high-altitude experience. From carrying your own load to the need for technical knowledge, the peak requires a climber’s insight and courage, its significantly lower height helps you switch from trekking to climbing with ease.
A gruelling climb requires learning new skills; using an ice axe, pitching a tent in the snow, abseiling, teamwork, and even seemingly simple tasks like ‘walking’ – in the snow, on a steep slope, in extremely heavy, shin-high snow boots. With the ever-changing weather, we never know when the next snowstorm, whiteout, or torrential rain will hit us – making the trek even more exciting and challenging at the same time.
| Itinerary:
Day 1. Arrival at the camp in the Solang Valley
- Altitude: 2,050 M
- Arrive at Solang and the allotment of tents is done so you can relax and freshen up. This will be followed by an acclimatisation walk as it is vital to acclimatise the body to the altitude. After lunch goes trekking To Anjani Mahadev Waterfall for 2 Hour Trek then back to camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2. Solang Valley to Bakkarthach via Dhundi
- Altitude: 3,300 M
- After a hot breakfast, our trek to Bakarthach begins. In the afternoon you will arrive in Bakarthach for a late lunch. You will stay overnight in Bakarthach. Bakarthach is a beautiful place just above the tree line at an altitude of 10,800 ft. The mighty Hanuman Tibba looks down on you from behind and the roaring river Beas flows through the valley next to the camp.
Day 3. Bakkarthatch to Advance Base Camp at Lady Leg
- Altitude: 3,840 M
- Today we start early around 6:30 as we need to get to ABC early to set up camp and learn Snowcraft there. With a light breakfast, we arrive at our campsite early enough to have a hot lunch ourselves, around 11:30 am. Now we are preparing camps for the team here and we will rest for a few hours. No sleep is prescribed here already as AMS starts to set in easily. Weather permitting in the afternoon we will move to the snow sections in front of the campsite for our Snowcraft. Today we will learn a few critical things – Ascent and descent in heavy snow, Using an ice axe as a temporary anchor, Self-blocking with an ice axe, rope and using technical climbing equipment.
Day 4. Acclimatisation and transfer to Summit Camp
- Altitude: 4,200 M
- The morning is reserved for practising the craft we learned yesterday. In the afternoon we start moving towards our Summit Camp. The hike is short (about 1 hour) to Summit Camp, where we pitch our tents. From the big hum, where we set up our Summit camp for acclimatisation, we go a little higher and gather to rest at the Summit Camp. Summit Camp can be set up higher up if there is less snow. Basically, the goal is to reduce the time of the Summit attempt.
Day 5. Summit Attempt (Friendship Peak) and back to Base camp
- Altitude: 5,289 M
- At midnight on the 6th day, start your climb to the top, the summit simply looks like a cakewalk. The first patch looks more like flat land but requires enough strength to reach the point where the ridge climb begins. This is part of the technical climbing and requires a front grip at certain points. The climb to the top usually takes 6 hours. Start descending at 6 am. Reach Lady’s leg and start your journey back to Solang Valley
Day 6 - Reserve Day
- This is a reserve day for a second summit attempt. It will only be used in case of bad weather or other unexpected conditions
Day 7 - Base camp in Solang Valley
- Altitude: 2,050 M
- Departure from Solang Valley
