| Overview
One of the many impressive mountains in the Garhwal Himalayas is Black Peak – the highest peak of the Saraswati Range in the Ruinsara Valley. Called Kalanag in the local dialect – so named for the uncanny resemblance of the peak’s head to that of a black cobra – it is 6,287M of stunning beauty. The Bandarpunch massif (also called the Saraswati range) consists of 3 peaks: White Peak or Bandarpunch II at 6,102 m, Bandarpunch I at 6,316 m and Kalanag (Black Peak) at 6,287 m. Black Peak, is daunting with it dominating the Bandarpunch massif in structure and the nature of the climbing required to reach its summit, making it a rung on any mountaineer’s peak list.
Black Peak offers the right combination of beauty and challenge. A technical expedition overall, the most challenging section of the climb is a 75-foot vertical ice wall with a 65 to 70-degree incline coming to the top. Walking across cracked snowfields, navigating glaciers, miles of rocky moraines and the ever-thinning air at altitude, Black Peak is an overall challenging endeavour that requires knowledge of mountaineering equipment and skills specific to survival at this altitude. It is therefore an expedition reserved only for experienced climbers. Mountaineering certification or, conversely, extensive experience with high-altitude tourism and extreme temperatures is a mandate to carry out this demanding expedition.
Thanks to its wonderful location, Black Peak has some of the most revered mountains in its vicinity. All the major peaks of the Garhwal range like Swargarohini, Bhagirathi massif, Bandarpunch, Gangotri range and many more keep you company on the trail. The trail itself, passing through Govind National Park, which is known for its diverse flora and fauna, boasts unrivalled beauty across a range of landscapes from alpine meadows to pine forests to moraine ridges, boulders and glacial basins.
