” Trek For All Weather
Trekking to high-altitude glacial lakes is quite an adventure in itself and can captivate any hiker. Usually, these high-altitude lakes are difficult to reach and require days of hiking and crossing difficult terrains before you can enjoy the view of the lake. But all these heavy complications can be kept at bay with the beautiful Bhrigu Lake Trek in the upper Kullu Valley on the eastern side of the famous Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh. This is an ideal weekend hike promising lots of fun for both beginners and experienced hikers. Nestled at an altitude of 14,000 feet, the Bhrigu Lake Trek offers mesmerising natural views and breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, lush meadows, and green rich forests. One of the popular trekking expeditions, The Bhrigu Lake Trek has gained prominence due to its absolute display of natural extravagance and is one of the easy treks in the Himalayas. People with competent physical fitness can easily enjoy the privilege of hiking in the exclusive lake area even without previous hiking experience. The Bhrigu Lake trek may be an ideal option for beginners, but every Himalayan terrain brings a special set of challenges. The routes of this trek are steep with a hard climb of 7 km on day 1 and 6 km on day 2 without any descent. In a short time, we will gain considerable altitude. You need good leg strength and endurance to cover these distances. Without proper practice, gear knowledge, and a standard level of fitness, this could prove fatal. The picturesque Bhrigu Lake has significant historical and religious implications. According to information provided by the locals, there is an association between the lake with Sage Bhriga as the pious soul is known to have performed powerful meditations and rituals on the banks of the lake hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Even the locals believe that many gods of the Kullu valley have taken a dip in the sacred waters of the lake, making it sacred for devotees. The location of Bhrigu lake is about 6 km from Gulaba which is a picturesque village about 21 km from Manali.

Best time to visit:-

Summer: The weather in Bhrigu Lake remains healthy and pleasant in summer. The Himalayas are clearly visible and the cool breeze adds to the charm of the holiday. Carry light woolens with you.

Monsoon: Bhrigu Lake becomes greener during the monsoon season. Although trekking becomes challenging and there is a chance that the roads will be blocked for several hours due to landslides, so it’s better to avoid trek in the monsoon.

Spring: The spring month from mid-September to early November is considered the best time to trek Bhrigu Lake. Trekking is fun with lush greenery all around and calm weather.

Winter: The region is covered with snow during the winter season and accommodation options are there.  Bhrigu Lake looks best during winter and the trek really beautiful. It is recommended to wear heavy woolen clothes.

| Itinerary:

  • Drive Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Drive Distance: 21 km
  • Trek distance: 7 km
  • Trek Duration: 5 hours
  • Altitude: 12,500 ft

Highlight:

  • The journey starts from Manali, along the Rohtang Pass Road towards the small village of Gulaba. Three hill towns – Kolang, Palchan, and Kothi mark the way and it gets more beautiful with pine forests. The small place is picturesquely surrounded by snow-covered hills. The sweet pastures washed by the Beas watercourse would have made for fantastic pictures at Gulaba, had it not been for the crowd of Rohtang. After arrival in gulaba
  • Now the walk will be steep, steep walk, so you need to go equipped with 2 liters of water and a small snack to rest between test laps.
  • For the first few kilometers, we continue to drag ourselves under the forest canopy and bathe in the shade of rustling conifers. You can easily see oaks, cedars, and birches. It is a beautiful sight to see the blue among these leaves. After 20 minutes go on the trek and the forest has now receded and earlier only rolling green meadows developed. This is a pastoral zone where cattle herders are brought from local villages throughout the summer. A few mud huts and camp poles could be found here. Leave the meadow behind and head south. At this point, you will find the sharp peak of Hanuman Tibba and a little further down the peaks of the Seven Sisters.
  • Somewhere deep below lies the green patch of the Beas Kund valley. Another mild jungle cover follows, around which the trail drops again to rugged meadows the excitement peaks when the road gets narrower and steeper just before entering the Rola Kholi pastures. About 15 to 20 minutes from the campsite we pass two nallah or small streams which are also our water sources. Our camp is located near chor nallah in Rola Kholi camp.
  • Trek distance: 5 km
  • Trek Duration: 4 hours
  • Altitude: 14,000 ft

Highlight:

  • Today is an extraordinary change of scenery from anything we have experienced in the previous days! We start early in the morning and cover a distance of 5 kilometers in about 4 hours along a steep and massively stony road. The green meadows of the last day seem like a dream, but this landscape is no less captivating and even more refreshing in the cool mountain climate.
  • By June you can expect this course after Rola Khuli to be covered in snow. From mid-July, gradients of brown, green, and white become visible as the snow melts. On the last section of the trail, it is very advisable to drive slowly and not rush at all, because the road is covered with rubble and slippery boulders.
  • The alpine lake can be seen between the two ridges that we reach at the end of the last rocky circuit. Whether it is the height of winter or the beginning of summer, the lake is never completely frozen. This is an occurrence attributed to the power of the sage Bhrigu of ancient myths, after whom this lake is named. From the high belt surrounding the lake, you can immediately catch a glimpse of the Solang Valley nestled in the distance, and on a clear day, the sky lights up with the magnificent peaks of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges.
  • Trek distance: 12 km
  • Trek Duration: 5 hours
  • Drive Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Drive Distance: 21 km
  • Altitude: 6,726 ft

Highlight:

  • Today we will start our return from Birgu lake to Manali via Rola Kholi and Gulaba on the same beaten track through green meadows in one long move to Gulaba which will take about 5 hours and from there drive back to Manali, reaching Manali between 3 to 4 pm.

Note: There is an alternative return route to Manali via Vashisht and Pandu Ropa from the Bhrigu Lake site but we find this route more relaxed and sustainable for a soothing green trek.
